My latest middle grade book Strays releases June 2, 2026. This book comes from a personal place, but more on that in future blog posts. Today I am kicking off my celebration of all things animals with Wet Nose Wednedsays. And my inaugral post is about a one-year old dog named Eugene.

It was a snowy, Midwestern January night when a heart-melting video posted by Best Friends Animal Society came into my feed. Eugene's fosters really adored this lovable pooch but wanted to give him a chance at a forever home by Christmas. When no one adopted him, Nikki and Jason decided maybe he had already found a home. With them.

And like the best holiday movies, Eugene went from foster to forever home, and there's no questioning his joy. See his "100% cuddle trained" joy and smile when greeted by Nikki.

Animals bring so much hope, humor, love and compassion into our lives. As I continue with Wet Nose Wednesdays, I want to share some extraordinary tales (and sometimes tails) about the greatness in animals. As pets or otherwise.

Read more about Eugene's story in People online.
